On her way back to the house, Beatrice noticed Hero and her maid Ursula seated on the edge of a fountain that was ringed by statues on pedestals. Beatrice went to join them, but ducked behind the nearest statue when Ursula shrieked, “Lord Benedick? In love with Lady Beatrice?”

“Don Pedro told me so,” said Hero. “He asked me to mention it to Beatrice, but I refused. She’ll never return Benedick’s love.”

“Why ever not?” Ursula exclaimed. “He’s a handsome enough fellow.”
